I remember sitting in one of my first leadership training sessions as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard, feeling completely out of place. The facilitator asked us to reflect on our leadership practice, and I thought, ‘Leadership? Me? I just started my career, I don’t have any titles!’
You Don’t Need a Title to Lead
That workshop sparked a realization: leadership isn’t confined to boardrooms or corner offices. It’s woven into the fabric of our daily lives. As I transitioned into leadership coaching, I discovered this truth echoed throughout leadership literature and practice. Yet, I often hear from new managers and team leads the same question I once asked myself: ‘How can I be a leader when I’ve never thought of myself as one?’
The answer lies in recognizing the five foundational leadership skills: self-awareness, communication, emotional intelligence, influence, and adaptability. We practice these skills in ways we often overlook.
Leadership in Everyday Moments
Parenting, for instance, is a masterclass in leadership. It demands self-awareness to understand your impact, clear communication to guide, emotional intelligence to connect, influence to inspire, and adaptability to navigate ever-changing situations.
Even simple social interactions reveal leadership. I recall a conversation with an office inspector. His calm, clear explanation of his work, and his assurance of locking up, left me feeling relaxed and secure. He demonstrated communication, emotional intelligence, and accountability – all leadership in action.
Consider the janitorial team in my building. Their consistent, organized approach to their work, even when I was out of the office, showcased adaptability, accountability, and influence. Returning to a clean, refreshed space always brightened my day. They weren’t just cleaning; they were leading with their commitment and care.
Recognizing Your Leadership
At that Harvard workshop, I challenged myself to identify my own leadership moments. I realized I was leading when I:
- Acknowledged my positive and negative influence while conducting research.
- Connected with peers through genuine curiosity during ethical discussions.
- Leveraged my experience to guide tram projects, communicating effectively and modeling teamwork.
These experiences, like yours, are built on those five core skills.
